Council pushes ban on condoms as evidence

Advocates and Council members are pushing for a full statewide ban on using condoms as evidence of prostitution-related crimes.
They say a policy change announced last month by the NYPD to limit when condoms can be seized as evidence doesnt go far enough - because they can still be used to prove promotion of prostitution and sex trafficking.
Police and prosecutors continued confiscation of condoms as evidence is contributing to a public health crisis in New York City, Andrea Ritchie of the Access to Condoms Coalition said Monday at a hearing on a Council resolution pushing for a change in state law, adding the practice will have the effect of harming the very individuals promoting and trafficking laws are intended to protect.
