AFL-CIO backs medical marijuana bill

Laura Nahmias

ALBANY—One of New York’s most powerful labor unions, the state A.F.L.-C.I.O., is throwing its support behind the Compassionate Care Act, a bill that would legalize medical marijuana in the state.

The labor union’s support comes at a critical time for the bill, which advocates hope will come to the floor in the final weeks of the legislative session this year.

“The medical marijuana issue has been debated not just over the course of this legislative session but for many years; other states have moved forward and its time New York does the same,” A.F.L.-C.I.O. president Mario Cilento wrote in a newsletter to the union’s members.
