New York City Council to take up Avonte's Law

NEW YORK (WABC) -- New York City lawmakers will take up a new proposal Thursday aimed at keeping a better watch on students.

The City Council Committee on Education is expected to pass Avonte's Law, named after 14-year-old Avonte Oquendo, the non-verbal autistic boy who died after running away from his school in Long Island City, Queens, last October.

His body was found on the shores of the East River in College Point three months later.

The proposal requires the Department of Education to install alarms on all entry doors in all elementary schools and in schools that have special needs programs.
