Care advocates carry demands to Assembly

Casey Seiler

Albany

Members of the disabled community and other activists stormed the Assembly chamber Wednesday afternoon.

The action caused a brief shoving match with the chamber's sergeants-at-arms and a standoff that derailed proceedings.

The protesters, including members of American Disabled for Attendant Programs Today, seek a vote on a program bill offered by Gov. Andrew Cuomo. It would allow a new category of caregiver, called "advanced home health aides," who would be allowed to perform certain duties by making exceptions to the state Nurse Practice Act.
