Sparks fly between GOP Rep. Michael Grimm and Democratic challenger Recchia in wake of Cantor's downfall

Tom Wrobleski

WASHINGTON, D.C. - GOP Majority Leader Eric Cantor's stunning primary loss set off a war of words between Rep. Michael Grimm (R-Staten Island/Brooklyn) and Democratic challenger Domenic M. Recchia Jr.

Cantor went down to defeat on Tuesday night to Tea Party-backed college professor David Brat. Cantor is set to resign as majority leader on July 31 and a full-blown scramble for power is already under way on Capitol Hill.

"If last night's results prove anything, it is that the Tea Party continues to control the agenda in the Republican Congress," said Recchia campaign spokeswoman Sarah Weinstein. "Since the day he took office, Michael Grimm has rubber-stamped the far right wing's irresponsible agenda that brought on the reckless government shutdown and put big oil, billionaires, and the special interests ahead of Staten Island and Brooklyn's middle class families and seniors."
