Cuomo gets bill to ban toxic chemicals in baby products

By Brian Nearing

Albany

State lawmakers have moved to ban a toxic flame retardant used in baby products such as car seats, high chairs and changing pads.

If the bill is signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, this would be the second form of a chlorine-based chemical called tris to be banned in the state since 2013. This form of tris — TDCPP — was labeled a carcinogen in California, and would no longer be allowed in products meant for children three years of age or younger after Dec. 1, 2015. The TCEP form was banned in New York earlier.

Used to inhibit foam from rapidly igniting, tris can be released from the foam, and into the air, over time. The chemical can be inhaled or absorbed through the skin.
