Henrietta refund measure goes to Cuomo

Legislation approving a tax refund of $100 to each of about 10,000 households in Henrietta has been approved by state lawmakers and will now go to Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
In a few days, a packet will be going to the governor encouraging him to sign the legislation, said Allan Richards, who is on the staff of Assemblyman Harry Bronson, D-Rochester, whose district includes Henrietta.
Bronson and state Sen. Patrick Gallivan, R-Elma, Erie County, who represents Henrietta in the Senate, introduced companion bills approved last week. The Henrietta Town Board requested such legislation, which is required before any tax funds can be returned to taxpayers.
The refunds, which would total about $1 million, would come from a $10.8 million surplus that the town built up between 2008 and 2012. The surplus, which has since grown to about $12 million, was considered excessive by the state Comptrollers Office, which earlier this year released an audit of the town.
