Mayor de Blasio, City Council announced on-time $75 billion budget

CORINNE LESTCH

Signaling the end of the conflict-ridden "budget dance" of the past, Mayor de Blasio, along with City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and Council members, said they ushered in a collaborative, progressive era with their on-time $75 billion budget with millions allocated for support and community services.

"We did not play the game of cutting resources from nonprofits that were serving communities, we just wouldn't do that," said de Blasio. "We created order and consistency and respect in this process. I'm very proud of what everyone in this process has done."

The budget, announced with fanfare Thursday night in the City Hall rotunda, includes $32.5 million for enhanced services for mentally ill inmates to reduce violence at Rikers Island and $19 million for a plan to reduce violent crime in New York City Housing Authority developments.

The city budget - set to be agreed to with a handshake deal Thursday night - will add $15.5 million to the Parks Department budget, sources said.

The budget boost includes $750,000 as a small down payment on a parks equity scheme widely discussed among pols and advocates.

The money will be earmarked for small neighborhood parks’ conservancies, for maintenance and capital projects.

Late last Thursday evening, Mayor Bill de Blasio unveiled a $75 billion budget budget, one that would “have an extraordinary impact on all 8.4 million New Yorkers.”

Left unanswered, however, was a budgetary decision that will have some sort of impact, “extraordinary” or otherwise, on the lives of Rockaway residents: whether to continue funding the ferry connecting lower Manhattan to the Rockaway peninsula.

“There is no answer yet,” said Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder, who represents the area. “They’re saying that the budget details aren’t done yet and they still don’t know.”

The mayor’s office had no immediate comment.
