State: Long Island could soon see new area code

NEW YORK (AP) — Parts of Long Island could soon see a new area code and 10-digit dialing as the existing supply of telephone numbers quickly dwindles.

A state agency this week proposed splitting up Suffolk County between the existing 631 area code and a new area code.

New York's Department of Public Service said another proposal would keep all existing 631 numbers while using the additional area code for new numbers.

I thought EVERYONE was leaving New York????????? BTW, my older daughter and her wife live in North Babylon so this could affect them.

Edit: Cell phones? My husband and I moved to Florida seven years ago. We kept our NY 631 cell numbers because we could not part with our "little piece" of NY. Hell no, I will not give up my 631 area code. When we retire and move back in a couple of years, we would then need another NY number.
