Gov. Cuomo backs Charles Rangel over Adriano Espaillat as voters head to polls

CELESTE KATZ

Gov. Cuomo on Sunday formally endorsed Rep. Charles Rangel for re-election in his heated battle for a 23rd term.

Cuomo threw his support to the incumbent just ahead of Tuesday's Democratic NY-13 primary, which pits Rangel against state Sen. Adriano Espaillat and two other contenders.

"Charlie Rangel has fought for the people of his district for over 40 years. His experience, seniority, and steadfast commitment to improving the lives of New Yorkers continue to make him a critical voice in standing up to the Tea Party extremism that is threatening to take over Washington," Cuomo said in a statement.

"Charlie has dedicated his life to being a strong, progressive leader consistently delivering for his constituents. Today, I proudly endorse Charlie Rangel for another term in Congress."

1. Charles Rangel and Adriano Espaillat hit the stump as hard-fought NY-13 primary draws to a close

As Rep. Charles Rangel nabbed the endorsement of Gov. Cuomo Sunday, he and challenger Adriano Espaillat stumped for votes two days before their hard-fought primary.

Espaillat, the state senator giving the 22-term incumbent a run for his money, joined Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito marching through East Harlem greeting voters at businesses, parks, and housing projects, as supporters chanted “Espaillat que vamos!” and “Yes we can!”

He brushed off the governor’s endorsement, noting it came at the last minute. “If you call that an endorsement, God bless you,” he said.

The fact that the majority don't have a challenger (on both sides) is horrible.

I think that is a big reason that most don't vote. Seriously, why go to the voting booth when you have one choice? I mean at least in a primary with 3 good candidates that have fought hard through the campaign would get people out to vote and that would help in overall elections. General election is different story....EVERYONE must go and vote for the Democrats.

5. I think that non-partisian judges should do redistricting for legislative seats in this nation.

We have about 30 competitive seats out of 435 seats. Should be 200 competitive seats.

I actually think that it should be the county that you live. If you live in a county, then folks their try to run and represent you in the Congress. Get rid of all this redistricting. If a county is huge well sorry....The Congressman just needs to work harder.

You should see my district. It is ridiculous. We are district 1 in Maryland, but we are cut so weird. We should be with Annapolis, but they cut us to ensure that we will always be part of the Republicans from the Eastern Shore. I live in Arnold Maryland which is 2 seconds to Annapolis....the Eastern Shore of Maryland has nothing to do with where I live at all. It is just insane. Could not believe Governor O'Malley did that.

Well we do have Bill Tilghman who I will vote for tomorrow in the primary. He has another Democrat that is running against him. However, he has little chance of betting Andy Wheeler in November....I will vote for Tilghman in November but it will be a blowout for Andy....that is all about redistricting. The made sure that it was a Republican district when they redistricted. Such a shame. On Bill Tilghman's Facebook, he has 95 likes! Yieks!

ALEX ISENSTADT

NEW YORK — If Charles Rangel is going to get pushed out of Congress, it won’t be without a dance.
The 84-year-old Harlem congressman barnstormed his northern Manhattan district this weekend, making one last pitch in the final campaign of a political career that has spanned more than four decades.

15. Once more with Charlie

NYDN

At the age of 84 and after 44 years in Congress, Rep. Charlie Rangel is seeking a likely last hurrah with reelection to a 23rd term in Washington. The voters of the 13th district, covering upper Manhattan and some of the Bronx, should give it to him.

Rangel is also pursuing redemption after disastrously squandering his seniority and his chairmanship of the Ways and Means Committee, and suffering the humiliation of censure by his peers in the House of Representatives, for ethical breaches and disregarding tax obligations.

His offenses seemed to doom him two years ago and prompted this page to say then that enough of Rangel was enough. He prevailed nonetheless, proving that the voters held his long and distinguished service in higher regard than his late-career lapses

16. Team Charles Rangel rolls Bill Clinton robocall ahead of primary vote

CELESTE KATZ

Rep. Charles Rangel is reminding people to vote in Tuesday's primary with a little help from former President Bill Clinton.

“Hi, this is President Bill Clinton I’m calling to urge you to vote for my friend Congressman Charlie Rangel on Tuesday June 24th. Charlie is the only candidate with a proven track record of delivering results on the economy. He’s a fighter for good jobs, successful small businesses and working families. He has been for 40 years now,” Clinton says in a robocall released ahead of Rangel's second showdown with state Sen. Adriano Espaillat.
