Good-government groups wary of proposed amendment to change redistricting process

By Seamus Lyman

Three good government groups are calling on voters to reject a proposed constitutional amendment in order to stop selective redrawing of legislative districts.

In conjunction with Common Cause New York and Effective NY, the New York Public Interest Research Group released a report Monday urging voters to defeat the amendment to reform the process of redistricting.

An amendment has been proposed to be approved or denied by voters come November. Due to the controversial wording of the casino proposal on the ballot last fall, the groups will be watching closely to see that the wording is fair and not politically charged. The groups say the proposed amendment is nothing more than a front that will only perpetuate the system already in place.
