Justice for Our Veteran's Act fails in final days
By Julio Olivencia
The bill that advocates say would get veterans treatment for service-related injuries instead of prison time has failed to come to a vote in either chamber this session.
The Justice for Our Veteran's Act (A.07529-a/S.05624-a), sponsored by Sen. Joseph Griffo R-Rome, would have created a process by which an individual charged with a crime could have been evaluated by a health care professional to determine if a service-related injury played a role in the commission of the crime and whether or not the individual is recommended for an "alternate disposition program."
The defendant's charges would be reduced or dropped after successful completion of a treatment plan.
