With more than 4,600 votes counted from five counties, Stefanik leading Doheny by nearly 2-to-1 margin

Tuesday, June 24, 2014 - 9:21 pm
Updated at 10:05 p.m.

With about votes starting to come in from at least five of the 12 counties in the 21st Congressional districts reporting, Elise Stefanik of Willsboro is well ahead of Matt Doheny of Watertown County.

With most votes counted and in Fulton and some precincts reporting in St. Lawrence, Lewis, Warren and Essex counties, the 29-year-old Harvard graduate has received 3,019 votes compared to 1,672 for Doheny, the Watertown businessman who is trying for a third time to win the Republican party nomination.

The 21st Congressional district runs from south of Watertown to Plattsburgh to Glens Falls.

The winner of today’s primary will face newcomer Democrat Aaron Woolf, a filmmaker from Elizabethtown and Manhattan, and Green Party baker Matt Funiciello of Glens Falls, to replace Democrat Bill Owens of Plattsburgh, who has decided not to seek reelection.

She's a new face, so I'm more worried about her. And though this wasn't previously my district, when he was elected in 2009, Bill Owens was the first Democrat to represent NY-21 in 100 years.

Her chosen successor, Scott Murphy, won a single term, then we were back to Republicans again. John Boehner showed up in the district to support Chris Gibson.

It was so much fun the last time. One guy threatened to run me over in his car and a woman slammed her door in my face after shouting "You can tell Mr. Murphy I'll vote for him when he's pro-life!!!" And those on my list were likely supporters.

I think the gop knows there is more indictments coming on campaign finance fraud. They know his girlfriend is indicted and it is not pretty. They can not replace him.

Recchia twill likely win the district and the gop will try again in two years.

It's kind of the opposite in my neck-of-the-woods. For years the Republican (Jerry Solomon, John Sweeney) ran uncontested.

I wasn't exactly thrilled with Bill Owens, since he voted with the Republicans to censure Eric Holder while most of the Democrats walked out, think I mentioned that before, but he was certainly the better alternative. Aaron Woolf was pretty impressive when I heard him speak, but I'm wondering just how many have heard of him. And they've yet to open an office other than the one way up north in Plattsburgh.

Since most people don't pay a lot of attention, it requires even more explanation. Even when I was making GOTV calls for District 20, I was calling folks in places I'd never heard of...

And I pass Scott Murphy's house quite often. The debate between Stefanik and Doheny was held in Watertown, somewhere I've never been. And I think I passed through Plattsburgh once, sometime in the '70s.

That can't be a selling point, but I don't think Plattsburgh is much better. Though Glens Falls/Lake George isn't much fun unless you want to freeze or ski.

Glens Falls in winter, though I can't tell where this was taken:

But I didn't mind nearly so much until I learned to drive. We regularly get snowbanks like this and it's often impossible to attempt left turns.
