Tea Party candidate falls short in Central New York district

By Thomas Alston

On Tuesday, two-term U.S. Rep. Richard Hanna of Barneveld defeated Tea Party-backed challenger, state Assemblywoman Claudia Tenney R-New Hartford, in the Republican primary for New York's 22nd Congressional District in Central New York.

Hanna received 15,135 votes compared to Tenney's 13,503, with 100 percent of the districts reporting. This translated to a narrow six point margin, with Hanna receiving 53 percent of the vote while Tenney received 47 percent.

The primary race was a de facto election as the Democrats have not nominated a candidate for the district, which encompasses a sliver of the Mohawk Valley from Lake Ontario south to the Pennsylvania state border near Binghamton.
