I'm also gonna post similar in Science, ' cause some DUer will know....did this winters' extreme cold damage the fireflies? I know it's only early June, but I am sitting outside and I got to wondering. Maybe I should call county ag dept tomorrow to ask. I know the Ohio peach crop is gonna be poor due to the cold.

(5,157 posts)I have noticed a dearth of fireflies for many years now.
When I recall catching fireflies easily in glass jars as a child, and even my (now adult) children did to a certain extent, there would not be enough around to bother fetching the jar.
It's more unusual now to even see fireflies.
In my mind, I believe the cause is the heavy use of weed-killing chemicals so prevalent in lawn care.
I sadly admit to using a service which treats the lawn monthly during the growing season, so I am part of the problem.
