(3,622 posts)I won't be voting absentee since I am a polling judge and my precinct is in the same building I will be working.

(3,622 posts)I have had more issues with republicans coming to the polls and trying to intimidate us or make political statements at the polling stations. There should be no political discussions within 100 ft. of a polling place. We are constantly reminding republicans of the law. The few Democrats in Mason, OH have always been nice but we are in the minority (about 25%) so when we Democrats do cross paths there are a lot of pleasantries exchanged!
on edit: I don't mind the issues encountered at the polls since we can always call the police if things look like they might get out of hand. There was one incident where I should have called the police and had the voter arrested but I didn't. I ended up being moved to another precinct a year later because of the incident.

(2,577 posts)It's crap like you have had to put up with that has made me an absentee ballot voter for all major elections. Last major election I voted in person was in 2004 ... when I had to put up with waiting in line for 1-1/2 hours while Bush supporters stomped through the polling place wearing their Bush/Cheney buttons and eying all of us voters to see who they could challenge.
I know lots of folks who do act as judges in area polling places. You deserve all sorts of props.

(3,622 posts)a republican came in to vote and wanted a Democratic Party ballot. In Ohio you can change party affiliation the same day of the election. He stated that he wanted a Democratic Party ballot so he "could screw the election up" (he was part of the "Operation Chaos" ala Rush Limpballs). I immediately challenged him because you can't change party affiliation in Ohio unless it is without malice and if so it is a 4th degree felony. After a short discussion he decided to take a republican ballot. Four hours later he came back to the precinct and demanded a Democratic Party ballot all the time screaming at me and calling me a liar. He eventually left the precinct.
Last year he filed a complaint at the local Board of Elections saying I was intimidating him at the polling place and stalking him. I presented my e-mails that I had sent the BOE in 2008 and told the BOE that the person had filed a false claim against me. It was eventually decided that this guy was not all together and the BOE moved me to another precinct. This guy probably knows where I live, etc. which is scary enough and I really don't know who this person is, nor do I want to. I did see my lawyer about this and there is not much I can do about it. Sometimes I wonder if the price was too high to continue to be a polling judge but I do enjoy it for some odd reason.
on edit: if something like this where to happen again I would call 911 and have the person arrested on the spot, no questions asked. Then I would have a restraining order put on the SOB.
I live in Ohio, too, and I remember Rush's "Operation Chaos" stupidity. I'm sorry you had to take so much grief for doing your job.
It bothers me that the Limbaughs and the other hate-mongers on the right have people so wild at this point they are angry, irrational, and downright dangerous.
