Woman in jail for kids' skipping school dies in cell

snip> Eileen Dinino, a mother of seven, died at the Berks County Jail in Bern Township on Saturday. Dinino died 24-hours into her sentence. An autopsy was performed, but the coroner is awaiting toxicology results before deciding the cause of death.

snip> "That unfortunately is part of the law in Pennsylvania and I think it is insanity. There has got to be a better way to deal with truancy than putting somebody in prison," said Christian Leinbach, (R) Berks County commissioner.

Now, seven children will be motherless.

Spending two days as a guest of the county was supposed to "pay" for that. The judge said his sentencing was done very reluctantly, that no justice would be served by putting a mother in jail for the actions of her children.

Punitive Republican laws like this are just never going to work. They'd do much better financially rewarding perfect attendance for "at risk" kids.

They thought those kids were truant before? Mother, probably the only one that cared enough to make sure they got to school is gone.
