Charter-school administrative expenses are more than double those of conventional public schools, and their highest-ranking officials are paid far more. And while charter enrollment has jumped significantly over time, payments to the schools are far outpacing their rates of growth.
That's according to a report on Pennsylvania's charter schools, issued Thursday morning by the Pennsylvania School Boards Association.
In a 35-page study that came after rounds of records requests during the last 15 months, the conclusions present a broad picture of Pennsylvania's 173 charter schools that have become part of an ongoing national debate about what kind of effect charter schools are having on traditional public schools.
Set up as non-profit entities, charter schools in the Keystone State and across the country have been beset with criticism in recent years as conventional public-school proponents say charter schools have hurt public education. Receiving the bulk of their revenue from school districts, critics have argued floating money for charter schools has taken away funds from traditional schools.
Charter school advocates, however, have countered that charter schools provide more choices and can increase learning opportunities and encourage innovation.

(10,749 posts)It's all a game of smoke and mirrors. The private sector, in whatever guise, cannot necessarily do it better than the government and government employees.
This 40-year experiment has failed, and we are a lesser nation because of it. But becoming a better country was never part of the equation. It was all about lining the pockets of the private sector. In that respect it was a resounding success. But we have unfunded and underfunded and dysfunctional government agencies at local, state, and federal levels. Military services are outsourced to mercenaries. Military support services are subbed out to Cheney and his co-conspirators. Key services in many, many federal agencies are provided by private contractors at inflated costs. Intelligence is outsourced. On the local levels, we have police and fire services run by private equity companies.
You want to know about our malaise? Nothing works as it should. Complaining doesn't work because as individuals and consumers companies just don't care. Amazon is on its way to becoming the first trillion dollar company. You think they give a shit that your shoes arrived late? Monsanto has contaminated soil worldwide. The social contract is broker, which has, in part, allowed a fascist strongman to become a major party nominee for president. Optimistic? Not me.

Charter supers are paid MORE??
I think Administration of schools is obscene on any level. All they do
is go on education junkets with each other and meet textbook publishers
who print to suit their preferences.
Chop these guys down to size and make them teach 1/2 time. Oh, won't
the unions be upset with that?
