Grace Garcia, the executive director of the Democratic women-in-politics group Annie's List, was killed in a fatal car accident in Waxahachie on Monday, the organization said early Tuesday morning.
"It is with a tremendous sense of loss that we announce the passing of our executive director and leader Grace Garcia, who lost her life in a car accident Monday afternoon," Annie's List board chair Amber Anderson Mostyn said in a statement.
Garcia came to work for Annie's List after serving Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as a senior adviser in the Office of the Chief of Protocol. Before working at the State Department, she ran an event management and public affairs firm she founded in 2001.
Garcia spent more than a decade orchestrating the schedules of then-President Bill Clinton, and later, Hillary Clinton. She worked as the deputy director in the White House's Office of Presidential Scheduling and served as the director of the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs at the U.S. Department of the Interior.

Grace Garcia, a former top aide to President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who returned to Texas last year to play a pivotal role in Democratic politics as the executive director of Annies List, was killed in a car accident Monday afternoon in Waxahachie. Piper Stege Nelson, the deputy director of Annies List and a former publisher of the Texas Observer, was also injured in the six-vehicle accident and was in the intensive care unit at Parkland Hospital in Dallas.
Garcia, 59, assumed the leadership of Annies List in March 2013, after leaving her post as senior advisor to the chief of protocol at the U.S. Department of State under Secretary Clinton in Washington, D.C.. On her return to Texas, Garcia immediately became a dynamic force in efforts to revitalize Democratic fortunes in the state. She played a critical role in laying the groundwork for Sen. Wendy Davis campaign for governor, and in persuading her childhood friend, Sen. Leticia Van de Putte, D-San Antonio, with whom she attended Jefferson High School in San Antonio, to run for lieutenant governor.
Annies List recruits, trains and helps finance women Democratic candidates for office in Texas.
It is with a tremendous sense of loss that we announce the passing of our executive director and leader Grace Garcia, who lost her life in a car accident Monday afternoon, Amber Mostyn, who chairs the Annies List board, said in a statement. Graces family has been notified and arrangements are pending. Her family will make an announcement regarding those arrangements in the coming days.
