Hegar And The “Cumbersome” Property Tax
As usual, with any tax discussion in Texas, the main issue is not being discussed. Well start with this, Hegar: I firmly believe the property tax is very cumbersome.
I firmly believe the property tax is very cumbersome, Hegar said. Its very troubling for homeowners, for business owners
its unfair in how its applied across the board.
But, the Katy state senator said its up to the Texas Legislature, not the comptrollers office, to decide to amend the system.
Yes, theres plenty of unfairness, especially when it comes to commercial and corporate tax breaks. Its nice how he quickly pointed out that its someone elses responsibility anyway. Hes currently in the Texas Legislature.
The real issue, of course, is the unequal, unfair, and insufficient tax system we have in Texas. Our schools and higher education systems are under-funded. Our health care, and safety net in Texas is at or near the bottom. Our infrastructure is crumbling.
If, as Hegar says, the property tax is cumbersome, then there are ways to alleviate that. But its not by eliminating it and raising the sales tax to 25%. A more sane way to do it would be by have a balanced state tax system across three types, aka the three-legged stool. The stool consists of three kinds of taxes sales, property, and income. Having all three allows each to be low, and in Hegars words, less cumbersome.
