Abilene woman fatally shot as she clutched newborn

ABILENE, Texas (AP) — Police say a woman found slain at a West Texas apartment was clutching her 2-week-old son when she was shot by her boyfriend, the newborn's father.

Abilene police Sgt. Lynn Beard said Thursday the child is being treated for a hand wound from the same round that killed 22-year-old Makayla Bunting. The couple's 4-year-old daughter was nearby but uninjured.

The suspect was hospitalized in critical condition with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Beard says the man will face charges of murder and injury to a child in the shooting Wednesday night.

Police initially thought her boyfriend was dead but he regained consciousness and attacked officers, who subdued him using a stun gun.
