Gov. Perry to visit Valley, tour immigration facility

Gov. Rick Perry will get a firsthand look at the immigration crisis in the Rio Grande Valley, with a tour an immigrant housing facility on Monday, his office announced via a news release Friday afternoon.

Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw will brief Perry on Monday, after the governor's tour.

"He's welcome, he can see first hand what we're dealing with," said state Sen. Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa, D-McAllen, who added his office was working on drafting a letter requesting more state funds to deal with the situation.

Read the release:

"Gov. Rick Perry will tour a federal facility housing unaccompanied alien children and receive a briefing from federal officials.

The governor will also visit Texas Department of Public Safety Region 3 Headquarters to receive a briefing from DPS Director Steve McCraw regarding the state’s border surge operation to stem criminal activity in the area, followed by a media availability."

Gov. Rick Perry wrote Friday to one of his greatest political foes, President Barack Obama, inviting him to Texas to see what he called the “humanitarian crisis” unfolding as unaccompanied children pour across the border with Mexico illegally.

In a stern, two-page letter, Perry asked the White House to send 1,000 additional National Guard troops with “arrest powers to support the Border Patrol,” as well as Lakota helicopters to South Texas, and to authorize the National Guard to use Predator drones to better combat drug and people smuggling.

The governor also wants the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to inspect facilities housing immigrants, especially children, who entered the U.S. illegally.

Perry, who might mount a second White House run in 2016, is fond of bashing the federal government. But he wrote Friday that the Texas border “problems and solutions” he’s detailing are Washington’s responsibility.

What Does the Texas Attorney General Do For Fun? “Sue the Obama Administration”

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott has openly bragged about suing the federal government, despite a losing track record.

Speaking at a conference this morning in Houston, Texas Attorney General Gregg Abbott talked a bit about what he likes to do for fun.

“What I really do for fun is I go into the office,” Abbott said at the Texas Hispanic Leadership Forum, “[and] I sue the Obama adminstration.”

Perry and Abbott's grandstanding will cost Texas millions of dollars. (read article)
