"This is a scam": Lt. Gov. Patrick calls it laughable for people under 65 to fear voting in person

by Matthew Watkins, Texas Tribune

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said Friday that efforts to expand mail-in voting during the coronavirus amount to a "scam by Democrats to steal the election" and claimed that people under 65 are at more risk of dying in a car wreck on the way to vote than they are from dying from the new coronavirus because they voted in person.

"There is no reason — capital N, capital O — no reason that anyone under 65 should be able to say I am afraid to go vote," Patrick, a Republican, said in an interview with Fox News. "Have they been to a grocery store? Have they been to Walmart? Have they been to Lowe’s? Have they been to Home Depot? Have they been anywhere? Have they been afraid to go out of their house? This is a scam by the Democrats to steal the election."

Texas has been locked in a legal fight over whether it has to expand who is eligible to vote by mail during the coronavirus pandemic. Democrats and multiple voters have sued the state, saying it's dangerous to require people to wait in line and cast ballots on machines shared with other voters while the virus is spreading. GOP state officials have opposed the effort, however, saying that mail-in voting is vulnerable to fraud.

Patrick repeated those worries about fraud Friday while also dismissing any fears people might have about going to the polls if they aren't eligible for a mail-in ballot. Patrick noted that the vast majority of people dying from the virus are older. Currently in Texas, anyone 65 or older or with a disability is eligible for a ballot.

1. We ahve had plenty of deaths in 50's. First death. But, getting the illness alone is two weeks

to a month of healing, not to mention hospital cost. We have read plenty of stories of younger than 65 struggling for weeks. Out of work and incurring medical bills.

I am 58, not 60 (as some say) but hey, pretty close. But then, I can also give it to my 81 yr old father.

2. It's not about fear-- it's about how we all have the right to vote, and that means...

we all have the right to vote pretty much any way we please. If possible.

Historically, poll voting has been the most scandalously fraudulent, whether it's machine in the Chicago River, or destroying the ballots of anyone not voting "properly".

Complaints about voting often as not mean complaints about manipulation being lessened--OHMIGOD if we let them vote by mail, they might actually vote!

I have not been inside a grocery store. I have not been inside Walmart, Lowes, Home Depot. I have not been anywhere since BEFORE the lockdown because I am not a stupid COVIDIOT. I am not afraid.

I am sick of these fuckers trying to tell me I am afraid. I am being smart you dumb mother fucker!

I am 60 years old and take a Chemo drug due to Rheumatoid Arthritis (the dose is lower than for cancer, but it still impacts my immune system). So Dan Patrick can be the fuckwit he is and go jump in to a vat of bleach for all I care.

I'm so pissed off...gonna make more calls on Monday.

Sorry for the language...

Patrick is currently indicted for 3 counts of securities fraud. As a former radio shock jock, does anyone honestly believe he’s qualified to protect Texans’ voting rights? He has as much concern for voters’ health and welfare as Trump, which is zero.

7. The Republicans know that many many poll workers are seniors and won't want to work

So there won’t be enough poll workers and polling places will be closed at the last minute causing confusion about where to vote. Of course most of the polling places closed will be in Democratic areas
