Can any of you Texans (or former Texans) tell me

what kind of area Thorndale, TX is? My understanding is that it's between Austin and San Marcos. I have a friend who's thinking about moving there...Thanks for any input. (I'll post in the TX group too).

It is 45 minutes northeast of Austin, TX.
A very small town (~ 1500 people).
Your friend might want to decide what he needs to be within 15 minutes of his house (grocery store, etc.).

It originally was a rural farming town, with rich soil for cotton. I haven't been there in years, so it may have grown into a suburban bedroom community by now. (pop. in 2010 was 1300, but I'm sure it has grown larger than that in 10 years.) It is not between Austin and San Marcos (that would be south), and not on an interstate. I think it would be a quieter place to live than the metropolitan Travis County/Williamson County/Harris County which has grown so tremendously.

As others have noted, it's a small town to the NE of the Austin metro. Small towns in the vicinity are generally pretty conservative, unless they're suburban, which Thorndale is not.

It's a typical small town - couple of restaurants, a few bars, elementary/middle/high schools. It had a Dollar General last time I drove through, but I don't recall if it has other local groceries, etc.

Edit: it's about 10 miles from Taylor, which would be the closest town large enough (~18k) to have the usual array of goods and services.

Sorry, I know most of the small towns on 35 between San Antonio and Austin, but have not driven north of Austin for 25 years.

Based on where it is on the map it looks like it's in a real conservative area. Population 1300. Why would anyone want to move there?

Here in San Antonio, we have our suburban Hicks like New Braunfels, Garden Ridge, Boerne, Helotes, but those places are nice...(Expensive and Republican, but nice if you have money) They have nice scenery, water attractions too.
