Spaulding will recommend state college campus closures, consolidations with Castleton U.

CASTLETON — The chancellor of the Vermont State College System recommends, among other things, that the two campuses of Northern State University consolidate with Castleton University, resulting in the loss of 500 jobs.

VSCS Chancellor Jeb Spaulding announced Friday the recommendations will be made to the VSCS Board of Trustees “to address significant financial challenges greatly exacerbated by the global COVID-19 pandemic.”

The plan will be presented to the trustees on Monday, according to a statement from Spaulding.

“We will be upholding the best of Castleton and adding strong programs from Northern Vermont University to enhance student opportunities, including those offered through NVU Online,” Spaulding stated.

Or even for the long term, the damned professors better do the jobs they’re getting paid to do. My son has 2 classes that have essentially gone to “teach yourself” with one 20-25 min zoom discussion session a week. The profs dumped their power points on the kids and said read them and read the book, then we’ll talk about it. So they’ve dropped more than 2.5 classes of lecture a week.

Ticks me off. Our dept is working online 40 hrs a week, holding our regular meetings - all of our regular duties. I can see adjusting if you’re something like a lab or hand-on, but one is art history and the other is the history of the Roman Empire.
