Early life and education

Trammell was born in Berea, Kentucky, in the infirmary on campus at Berea College where his parents were attending as an undergraduate married couple. He spent time as a child in Kentucky, and then New York City when his father was at Columbia University, and as an adult moved to central Virginia.

His family ancestry dates back to the American colonial period, when Thomas Trammell immigrated to Virginia in 1671, arriving at the port of Alexandria as an indentured servant.

Education

Trammell was a political science undergraduate at Grove City College, and eventually went on to get advanced degrees or certificates in education, special education, history education, and research methodology, attending Virginia Commonwealth University to complete his Master’s and Ph.D., and also taking classes through the University of Virginia. He serves as an associate professor of sociology, specializing in disability in higher education.

Professional career

Trammell has worked for procurement in state government, and as a special education and history teacher in central Virginia’s public schools. He currently works at Randolph-Macon College as Director of Disability Support Services and Associate Professor of Sociology.

Trammell is a frequently published author; his latest book The Richmond Slave Trade: The Economic Backbone of The Old Dominion, was published in 2012. He also served as president of the Blue Ridge chapter of the Virginia Writers Club.

Political career

Trammell has been a prolific writer in many diverse areas ranging from education to history, including two dozen books or book chapters; he was a regular contributor to the Washington Times.[6] His history with the Democratic Party goes back to his days at Grove City College, where he experienced a de facto ban in the school newspaper due to his Democratic views, and he spoke out then (as now) against various forms of discrimination in higher education. He was an active worker on both Bill Clinton presidential campaigns in Kentucky, where he also wrote local position papers and statewide editorials and quickly was recognized for his ideas. He also worked for the Michael Dukakis campaign.

2014 Elections

Running for Congress to represent the 7th Congressional district in 2014, Trammell has focused on the need for educational reform, including special education and greater access to college, student loan relief, jobs creation; accountability in massive public private projects like the 460 expansion, and basic healthcare that every American can access.

Personal life

Trammell and his wife Audrie reside on the old Goodwin farm in Louisa County near Mineral, Virginia, with several horses, sheep, and other animals. Jack has three grown children; Audrie has four. Six of their seven children will be in college this fall

No surprise he's interested in history!

Randolph-Macon College Professor and Director of Disability Support Services Jack Trammell will discuss his latest book, The Richmond Slave Trade: The Economic Backbone of The Old Dominion (The History Press, 2012.)

I've never been involved, but live in the district. A friend and I are going to reach out to see how we can help.

I probably won't be as involved as I was with Wayne Powell. I'm not in the District (not even in Virginia!) and daughter's expecting a baby in July, so not likely to do much traveling. Will likely post stuff about him (and read his 'new' book, which sounds very interesting.)

really help guide him, and help with logistical and moral support, as well as finances.
Also, the debates should be interesting. Brat and Trammell reportedly have a reasonably collegial relationship (at least they do NOW ), and they both are different enough from "regular pols" , to give some hope that a formal debate (and dare I hope, the campaign as a whole? Nah, that's just a fantasy. . ) really could be an honest discussion about the issues, for once.

He seems like an interesting guy to me.

assistance he receives will have to be grassroots and local. Yes, could and should be an interesting campaign and debate.
