CHARLOTTESVILLE – George Welsh, the Hall of Fame coach who lifted U.Va. football from obscurity and turned the Cavaliers into the No. 1 team in the country, died Wednesday. Mr. Welsh was 85.

According to a statement from the school, Mr. Welsh "passed peacefully in the presence of his family."

Mr. Welsh, who was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2004, was the most successful coach in the school's history.

He coached 19 seasons at Virginia, inheriting a team that had managed just two winning seasons in 29 years.

His players affectionately called him because of his big nose. He took a program that was barely above club level and made it into an actual program.
