Fairfax County Public Schools holding hiring event for furloughed federal workers

FAIRFAX, Va. (FOX 5 DC) - Fairfax County Public Schools will hold a hiring event for furloughed workers who have been impacted by the government shutdown.
The district announced it will hold the event on Friday at the Fairfax County Public Schools Administration Center, located at 8115 Gatehouse Rd. in Falls Church, from 2 to 4:30 p.m.
School officials said they have a need for substitute teachers and pledged to work with qualified people to expedite their hiring.
The district also announced that breakfast and lunch would be provided to students regardless of their ability to pay and that unpaid balances would be allowed to accrue during the shutdown.
Anyone interested in serving as a substitute teacher is urged to
complete an application here. If youre interested in attending the hiring event, youre
urged to complete the event registration here.
Candidates were urged to bring original documents required for I-9 forms and employment eligibility verification to the hiring event.
The district reminded that background checks are required for all school employees and volunteers.

The Fairfax County School Board and I know there are many talented people in our community who work for the federal government, FCPS Superintendent Scott S. Brabrand said. We want to show support for federal employees who have been furloughed and may be looking for work during the partial shutdown. There is always a need for substitute teachers, and we pledge to work with qualified people to expedite their hiring.
The school district also committed to providing breakfast and lunch to all students regardless of ability to pay in order to support families affected by the shutdown. The district will permit unpaid balances to increase.
FCPS believes in the benefits of a healthy meal to support academic success in the classroom and wants to ensure that none of our students comes to school hungry, no matter their familys economic circumstances, Brabrand said.
