With health officer's planned approval, Kitsap County slated to apply for early reopening

A recommendation by the Kitsap Health Officer. Support from the Kitsap Public Health Board. Approval by the Kitsap County Board of Commissioners. All appear to be in place for Kitsap County to apply to reopen early and move ahead to the second phase of the governor's four-part coronavirus recovery plan.

At the health board’s special meeting scheduled for Wednesday, Kitsap Health Officer Dr. Susan Turner is slated to provide her recommendation that Kitsap County apply for the variance. According to the meeting’s agenda packet, Turner is recommending Kitsap move forward unless an outbreak occurs at a long-term care facility.

On Tuesday, Kitsap’s three commissioners told the Kitsap Sun they would also approve the county’s application to the state. A clear majority on the Kitsap Public Health Board, made up of the county commissioners and local mayors, also signaled its support in interviews.

That means — absent any major reversals and pending approval by state health officials — Kitsap could soon start to see some local businesses open their doors after three long months of extraordinary restrictions aimed at curbing the novel coronavirus. That could happen as early as this week, if all goes according to plan, health officials said at Wednesday's meeting.
