Sen. Ron Johnson's shameful votes
In a recent public opinion poll, 40% of Wisconsinites reported not knowing who Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) is after four years in office. For those still wondering, Johnson's recent votes opposing bipartisan legislation to help provide military veterans with health care and turning his back on common-sense relief for over 800,000 Wisconsin student loan borrowers went a long way in revealing his true self and his priorities.
Improving health care for our military veterans should be an issue that everyone can agree on. A bill passed by the U.S. Senate on June 11 would help veterans receive needed care in a timely manner by allowing the Department of Veterans Affairs to contract with private medical facilities. Johnson was one of only three senators to vote against it.
As an Army veteran who served in Afghanistan, I take it personally when Johnson says it would be too costly to give veterans the health care we need when we return from combat. He certainly doesn't have a problem fighting for tax cuts for millionaires. It is a shame Johnson isn't willing to take the same action on behalf of wounded veterans who fought for our country.
As offensive as his vote on veterans care was, Johnson also voted to block student loan debt relief. Across the nation, 40 million Americans carry over $1.2 trillion in student loans that take decades to pay off.
