Venezuela rejects UN condemnations of Syria, N. Korea, and Sri Lanka

http://el-nacional.com/mundo/Venezuela-ONU-Corea-Norte-Lanka_0_158384218.html

Only country on the human rights commission to oppose the measure against Syria.

Condemning a government fighting a civil war for human rights violations is nuts. And the opposition, well, who knows who they are? Since Khomeini hijacked the overthrow of the shah I've been suspicious in the extreme of taking sides in any internal dispute between different factions in a foreign country. You don't know who the opposition is. The current leaders may be awful, but that doesn't make the opposition any better. And you don't know, unless you're actually there on the ground seeing it happen, who's doing what to whom.
Ecuador's abstention was also a correct stance.

I wish we could resurrect Sherman and have him take a look at that. Somehow I doubt he'd have called off his March to the Sea in response.
Civil war is not a pretty thing. Getting entangled in one not your own is the height of stupidity.

Because civil wars (and other crackdowns) invariably involve civilians in the mix, states can intervene, with the blessing of the UN, of course.

It's called smart diplomacy that advances our interests: http://www.democraticunderground.com/10022555995
