Russian parliament to review space cooperation agreement with Cuba

MOSCOW, June 18 (RAPSI) – Russia’s government has forwarded a bill on the ratification of a peaceful space cooperation agreement with Cuba to parliament, the cabinet wrote on its website Wednesday.

“This is a framework agreement that outlines the principles, standards and conditions for the continued development of bilateral space cooperation, including copyright protection and regulation of these efforts and of the exchange of information,” the statement reads.

The agreement meets the interests of Russia, including the need to install ground augmentation and monitoring stations for the GLONASS system in Cuba, reads a supplemental reference note.

The civilian side of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) is designed to provide a navigation signal for the high-precision real time positioning of any vehicle equipped with a transceiver. It can also be used for military purposes.

The Russian government said in its statement that this agreement with Cuba should be ratified by parliament to become effective, because some of its provisions differ from those sealed in Russian legislation.
