Cuba's Buena Vista Social Club on 'Adios Tour'

HAVANA (AP) -- They were forgotten masters of a long-ago sound, their faces deeply lined and their hands spotted with age.
Then, suddenly, at an age when many performers would be retired, the members of this old-school band found themselves playing in some of the most hallowed venues around the world, sharing stages with the likes of Sting and Shakira.
After rocketing into the spotlight in the late 1990s, the Buena Vista Social Club became nothing less than Cuba's soundtrack to the world. Nearly two decades later, the remaining members of the group are preparing to disband after one last farewell tour.
"Many of the musicians have their own plans," said a visibly emotional Jesus "Aguje" Ramos, a trombonist and orchestra leader who has been with the group since the beginning. "They must be given a chance."

(39,313 posts)Would love to catch them somewhere. I just saw Juan de Marcos Afrocuban Allstars orchestra at the SF Jazz Festival. Juan was the person who worked with Ry Cooder on the Buena Vista idea. It's similar to the Buena Vista sound but a bit more up tempo and danceable.

(160,522 posts)Also remember seeing he was involved with the Buena Vista Social Club, and Ry Cooder. That was an outstanding idea, putting that film together to introduce them to people who'd not been lucky enough to have heard their music earlier.
Did Juan de Marcos bring the entire band group? That would have been amazing to hear.
I'll bet the Buena Vista Social Club will still do some things in Cuba, surely. They are certainly beloved. Maybe you have time to see them before they're outta here altogether.

(111,245 posts)who is a musical historian as much as he is a fine guitarist. It's a wonderful album, a lot mellower than you think it will be yet complicated enough that you'll want to listen to it often.
I'm sad they're retiring but I'm grateful they've performed as long as they have, they're wonderful.
