Venezuela: Activists form communard council

Activists from across Venezuela met this month to form the National Communard Council, which aims to coordinate the countrys commune movement and present its demands to the national government.
The council was formed in the western state of Lara during a three-day meeting of about 2000 communards (commune members) from around the country. Most represented a particular commune.
The meeting was the fifth national gathering of the independent National Communard Network since the organisation was founded in 2009.
The move is another step forward for Venezuelas communards. They are seeking to replace the states representative political structures, particularly local and regional governing bodies, with direct participatory bodies such as communal councils and communes.

Will EVERYONE be participating, regardless of membership in a (or THE) commune? This seems like a naked power grab of areas that don't vote PSUV.

(5,169 posts)I don't suppose the PSUV fans here are going to describe how disenfranchising non-commune members is MORE democratic than maintaining traditional civic structures, elected by any registered voters who wish to participate?

(2,035 posts)The whole Giordani-gate thing has really fractured Chavismo, and the last major blackout and the overwhelming evidence of Maduro's repression against protests and his clear incompetence in running an oil-rich country has probably left them unsure about if the Socialismo del Siglo XXI will survive.
