Colombia begins charging Canadian visitors $80 on entry

Colombia begins charging Canadian visitors $80 on entry
Dec 9, 2014 posted by Adriaan Alsema

Since the beginning of this month, Canadian citizens traveling to Colombia have to pay a COP160,000 or $80 entry fee.

The measure was imposed in response to Canada’s entry fee for Colombians.

According to Colombia’s Foreign Ministry, Canadians can still travel to Colombia without having to get a visa first, but have to pay the entry fee when passing through Migration either at the airport or when stepping on Colombian shores when on a cruise.

The Canadian entry fee has to be paid on Colombia’s mainland and on the Caribbean islands of San Andres and Providencia in either Colombian pesos or US dollars. Canadian dollars are reportedly not accepted by immigration officials.

The fee is charged to both tourists and diplomats alike.

Is this measure just directed at Colombians, and if so, why?
