Colombia: As of Today, Nationwide Mobilization for Senator Cepeda PDF Imprimir E-Mail

Bogota, Oct 22 (Prensa Latina) President of Union Patriótica party (UP), Aída Avella, has called for permanent mobilization in all cities to support and defend Senator Ivan Cepeda and against what she considered an attempt to silence him and tarnish his image to end his political career.

During a rally of solidarity with the left-wing Congress member, the UP leader and member of Frente Amplio por la Paz (Broad Front for Peace) announced that as of today, marches and other peaceful demonstrations will be staged in different localities to support Cepeda and c ondemn the maneuvers of the Attorney General's Office to discredit him.

"We are calling to organize us and take to the streets to demand respect for free speech and the right to exercise opposition, insisted Avella during the rally held in this capital.

According to a communique released Monday, the Attorney General's Office opened an investigation against the legislator of Polo Democratico Alternativo (alternative Democratic Pole-PDA) based on that he allegedly requested testimony from paramilitary officers held in prisons to accuse also Senator Alvaro Uribe and offered them bribes in exchange for their testimony.

After rejecting such arguments, Cepeda considered there are no guarantees for due process against him as it is based on evidence gathered by a detective at the service of the ex president and leader of the Centro Democratico party, Uribe.
