Haiti's Ousted Leader Makes Rare Appearance to Back Candidate

Haiti's Ousted Leader Makes Rare Appearance to Back Candidate
Published 30 August 2016

. . .

Haiti’s ousted former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide made an uncharacteristic public appearance Monday to endorse one of the country’s dozens of presidential candidates vying to fill the Caribbean island’s gaping power void.

. . .

Aristide stated his support for his Fanmi Lavalas party’s candidate, Maryse Narcisse, calling on Haitians to come together to “help heal” the country.

. . .

Aristide returned to Haiti in 2011 after seven years in exile in the wake of a coup in 2004 against his government. The former president was previously ousted in a coup in 1991 after becoming the country’s first democratically-elected leader. A U.S. intervention known as Operation Uphold Democracy reinstated Aristide in 1994 to complete his term.
