Haitis ousted former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide made an uncharacteristic public appearance Monday to endorse one of the countrys dozens of presidential candidates vying to fill the Caribbean islands gaping power void.
. . .
Aristide stated his support for his Fanmi Lavalas partys candidate, Maryse Narcisse, calling on Haitians to come together to help heal the country.
. . .
Aristide returned to Haiti in 2011 after seven years in exile in the wake of a coup in 2004 against his government. The former president was previously ousted in a coup in 1991 after becoming the countrys first democratically-elected leader. A U.S. intervention known as Operation Uphold Democracy reinstated Aristide in 1994 to complete his term.
