More than 10 thousand homicides occurred in Venezuela during 2018January 06 2019, 12:16 pm
translated from Spanish
A total of 10,573 murders were recorded in the country in the past 365 days, according to official figures prepared by the Venezuelan Security Observatory, among those attached to the Ministry of the Interior Justice and Peace.
Of the 24 entities that make up the national territory, Bolívar ended up being the most violent state in terms of the punishable offense described, at the end of the year with a rate of 52 homicides per hundred thousand inhabitants, which reflects an amount of 956 deaths.
However, the region with the highest homicide numbers was Miranda with 1,491, followed by Zulia with 1,007, Bolívar, Aragua with 914, Carabobo with 821 and Distrito Capital with 764.
According to the homicide rate, the most violent states were as follows: Bolivar, Aragua, Monagas, Miranda, Sucre, Delta Amacuro, Amazonas, and Sucre.
Compared to 2017, there was a decrease in this crime by 41.5 percent, from 2,547 to 1,491, for a total of 1,056 fewer.

For reference, there was 17,284 reported murder and non-negligent manslaughter cases in the U.S. in 2017. (no numbers for 2018, but early in December the belief was that the numbers were going to be down.) This in a nation that has 12X the population of Venezuela, with under 30 million. Also, firearm ownership is legal in the United States (to the law abiding) while illegal in Venezuela.
Know also that the Venezuelan government is not honest in its reporting, as two planes 3/4 filled with Venezuelans returning to Venezuela from abroad = 20,000+ jubilant Chavistas returning to their homeland!

(10,072 posts)1. Yes, the US had over 17,000 murders
Which is a 4.7% rate. Germany had a 0.8% rate. What is the rate in Venezuela? Total count can be deceiving.
Louisiana had a 12.4% rate, the highest in the nation.
