Economy Group Issue: SMW and concurrent economic discussion at crossroads.

Last edited Thu Jun 5, 2014, 02:17 AM - Edit history (1)

It has been determined that one of the features that has long been a draw for the long running Democratic Underground Stock Market Watch recurring thread is no longer available in a form where it can be included in the thread OP or in thread replies.

BACKGROUND:
Internet technology has marched on and near real time stock index value graphs as simple image files are no longer readily available to be linked into posts. Instead, almost all real time data is available for sharing as widgets that are embedded in posts using a short string of HTML code. The DU forum software does not support this type of widget, although there are some forums that do support them.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR THE SMW:
This is a good opportunity to discuss the future and evolution of the SMW and concurrent economic discussion at DU and that is the intent of this OP to do so.

But, if they aren't able to be directly linked they won't act as a draw. People want to see current market data.

of the Bloomberg graphs would require creating and running a program that:

- reads raw data from (free) reliable sources;
- say, once a minute, creates a standardised graph from the fresh data and
- takes a .jpg 'snapshot' of the fresh graph and
- posts the snapshot at a standard URL on some web server.

Would be a nice little open source project for someone or some group...

I had started searching with that in mind, but, it doesn't seem that anyone has tried it.

of being a working freelance analyst/programmer back in the '80s.

The work involved in, following the spec., actually doing the programming, is a bitch.

It's 10,000 times easier these days, using pre-supplied modules, of course (call that programming?). But that way you no longer even have the slightest hope of ever having anywhere near complete control over the machine...

Former GMAC mainframe programmer/analyst, using PL/1

Funny discussing programming, system analysis, design and implementation. This week I've been purging my house of unneeded stuff and came across all those computer science textbooks I used from the late 70s. Who needs these detailed books nowadays!

Sorry Hugin, I'm too old, and lack the time, to take on the initiative of 'coding' widgits, lol!
