AM General to update Humvees at Indiana factory
The Associated Press
June 12, 2014

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — AM General has been awarded a $90.5 million contract to restore and upgrade hundreds of Army National Guard Humvees at a northern Indiana factory

The South Bend-based company says the contract will have it work on up to 760 Humvees in the factory where the vehicles were built for the U.S. military for many years.

Company spokesman Jeff Adams tells the South Bend Tribune (http://bit.ly/1xNvdaD ) that preliminary work on the contract has started at the factory where AM General recalled more than 200 laid-off workers last month.

Adams says the contract include updating the National Guard Humvees with up-to-date equipment and providing spare parts.

There also could be more good news coming to AM General, according to Defense News.

The site reported that the Pentagon already cleared two major projects that are awaiting congressional approval. With Wednesday’s announcement, if the other two are approved, the three would total nearly $750 million in contracts for AM General.

-- One project involves the sale of 3,335 Humvees to Mexico in a deal valued at $556 million. According to defensenews.com, the sale would involve new Humvees made at AM General’s Mishawaka plant versus coming from excess stock from the Army or Marines. The deal also would include associated equipment, parts, training and logistical support.

-- The second project involves the sale of 200 Humvees to Iraq, valued at $101 million. According to a report from defensenews.com, the vehicles will be fitted for .50-caliber machine guns, communications gear and training equipment.

Earlier this year, the company recalled about 200 employees at its adjacent Commercial Assembly Plant to support production of the MV-1, which is a wheelchair accessible vehicle.
