Ford Motor Co. has lowered the fuel economy numbers for many of its hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles, plus its popular Fiesta, and promised to send checks to 200,000 U.S. customers who bought or leased Ford cars with inflated mileage numbers.

The affected cars, from the 2013 and 2014 model years, are the Fiesta, C-MAX, C-MAX Energi, Fusion, Fusion Energi and MKZ.

The company said a testing error had caused it to overstate fuel economy levels for those cars by as much as five miles per gallon on some models.

"We are committed to delivering top fuel economy and accurate information to our customers. When we see an issue, we address it," said Raj Nair, Ford group vice president of Global Product Development. "This was our mistake, plain and siimple. And we apologize to our customers"

Has averaged 45 mpg since I got it this winter. Diesel cars do better on gas milage than hybrids unless you're driving city. Not sure if it's less energy efficient to refine diesel or gas. And no I can't use biodiesel in my car.

so, after paying $3-5,000 more for the diesel, there's no economic advantage. Probably a wash, possibly a loss. If the price of diesel were lower, it would be a good choice, though.

FWIW, I average 35mpg, mostly local, on my Cruz ECO which I bought new for about 20 grand. No recalls, no mechanical problems, and the only maintenance costs I've had were 3 oil changes in 32,000 miles.

I'm tracking my costs to see how it all comes out. I certainly haven't had the vehicle long enough to make a clear decision on how it does versus my other gas powered cars. Drove a Mazda 6 which averaged between 28-30 mpg or about 325 miles per tankful. My TDI can get 650+ miles on a tankful though it has a 17 gal tank vs a 12 gal tank for my Mazda. My gas/diesel card monthly bill has gone down so I know my milage is saving me money on a monthly basis.

I agree that the upfront cost and maintenance will be higher than my previous car but if the vehicle takes less fuel over its lifetime than I feel slightly better. Any amount of $ I can keep out of the oil industry's hands is considered a small victory for me. Am hoping this car lasts long enough for my next vehicle to be a Tesla or some other electrical car that I can recharge using solar.

One other worry I hope I avoid with my TDI is some emergency where refined fuels are not readily available. Diesel is used in trucks, trains, industrial generators, large industrial boulders, power plants and home heating oil. If there was an emergency/shortage I'm guessing diesel would be produced over gas (but who knows).

Good luck with the Cruz. Heard good things about it but have had my fill of GM cars over the years and wouldn't really consider buying another one.

Around 47 on my cmax. Some days much better. Some days much worse. Its all about how you drive and the route matters also.

Eta mostly I do in town driving. On long interstate trips I only get around 40.

I've been noticing my city driving mileage getting better gradually. I'm getting about the same numbers you are now. Just passed the 10,000 mile mark.

It's nice now, I'm using it part time as a taxi/limo for Uber. Beats the hell out of the 20mpg I was getting in a Crown Vic.

It depends a lot on how much charge you have in the battery. Sometimes I get 60-70 mpg driving the three miles I drive to work, sometimes I get 38, depending on how much it turns over to the battery vs how much on gas. On those sorts of short trips, even something like the A/C will make a difference. If there is a lot of charge in the battery, then it will drive a lot on EV with A/C on. If the battery is low it will drive a lot on gas and AC makes it more likely to flip to gas.

Also, I live in Chattanooga and there are a lot of hills. So some days I get bad MPG because there was a lot of up-hill. My daughter's school is on top of a long steep hill and pick up is a lot of start and stop up the hill and I can down in the 20s on those trips.

But I figure that is still a lot better than I would have gotten in my old explorer on the same trip. So that's the way I think about it, comparing the trip itself to what it would have been versus just the mpg number.

So there is an interaction between how charged the battery is, A/C, terrain, and driving style.

I'm really good at keeping it in EV and keeping up a decent speed. But again, 90% of my driving is in-town and short distances.

Overall I love the car.

We just took a two-week trip to Florida and had enough room for luggage for a family of four and our dog.

I've noticed that if I really work at it I can get a little better MPG on the highway than the eco-cruise gets, but I gave up trying because it isn't worth the effort to me.

The AC is on all the time, but it's flat as a pancake.

One note, for future reference. When you buy new tires eventually, make sure you get a low rolling resistance tire. When I bought new tires for the Prius a couple of years ago, I put high traction tires on it, and my mileage dropped about 6-7 mpg immediately.

I noticed that the battery charged a lot faster from stopping in Florida than it does here. Here it is more about braking downhill.

Thanks for the info about the tires I will remember that.
