Long Island Rail Road Update

From email. X post in Socialist-Progressive

This Saturday, a throng of over 3,000 Union members and supporters from across Long Island attended a rally in support of Long Island Rail Road workers who have been working without a contract since 2010. An usual group of legislative supporters, composed of both Dermocratic and Republican legislators were on hand to support the workers.

Congressman Tim Bishop (D-Long Island) presented a letter signed by a bipartisan group of Congresspersons whose constituents would be affected by a work stoppage. The letter asks that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority adhere to the ruling of a neutral Presidential Emergency Board. So far, the MTA is ignoring the findings of not one, but two separate boards that have been called upon to mediate the dispute.

This week, we will be stepping up our efforts to appeal to Union members, commuters and the general public in Long Island through grass roots and online activities. One thing you can do right now is share one of what will be many member driven graphics available via our FaceBook page. We have also created a number of tweets that you can find here.

Below is some media coverage of the event.

inexcusable. I'm amazed the LIRR employees have put up with this. I rode the LIRR for 5 years in the late 70s, early 80s.....labor discussions between the the union and the MTA were always major news stories on Newsday. Thank goodness I never had to experience a strike.

Riding the LIRR was great........read the paper in the morning, slept, worked on my Army courses etc. Return trip, played pinochle with the same group every night.......just rolled up the scores at the end of the night and picked up where we left off the next evening. Fond memories.
