May seem like a bad forest fire year, but it isn't

This is from the National Interagency Fire Center

August 31, 2016

Twenty-six large fires have burned over 560,000 acres. Statistics show 2016 to be a million acres below the 10-year-average. 2016 fuel conditions are similar compared to previous years, but the source for fire ignitions has not occurred keeping the number of fires and acres burned lower than average.

Despite the damage in Lake County and near Big Sur, we've had far worse fire years up here, including some in the last decade.
