BP CEO Offers Fresh Blather On Climate "Goals": "It's Hard To Make Sense Of Much Of What He Said"

BP PLC doubled down on its commitment yesterday to offset its carbon dioxide emissions by 2050, but the oil major continued to offer few details on how it would fulfill that ambitious pledge. Uncertainty around the London-based company's decarbonization effort has prompted energy experts to question BP's commitment to the cause.

"The art of the possible is being redefined each and every day right now," Looney concluded. "So the next time someone tells us that tackling climate change is either too costly or too difficult, I think we need to remind them, and remind ourselves, of what just is happening right now."

Energy experts were not impressed. "It's hard to make sense of much of what he said because it doesn't hold together," said Deborah Gordon, the former director of the energy and climate program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. "This is like saying, 'I prefer warm weather and it's nice.' Nobody's going to dispute that," said Arvind Ravikumar, an energy engineering professor at the Harrisburg University of Science and Technology. "But the point is, what is BP doing in that regard?"

Questions about the sincerity of BP's climate pledge have dogged the company since it was announced earlier this year. The company plans to explain in September how it intends to erase its 415 million metric tons of annual emissions — a carbon footprint roughly the size of Australia
