So How Many Tesla Patents Are There?
gas2.org

Elon Musk has opened the doors to automakers to use Tesla’s patented EV technology. Sounds great, but how many patents does Tesla hold, and what for?

uAutoInsurance broke down the patent data, and not surprisingly found that most Tesla patents have to do with battery technology. Of the 249 Tesla patents analyzed, 104 of them related to battery technology, look this hybrid-battery patent uncovered last year. The next largest group was 65 “uncategorized” patents, followed by 28 charging patents and just 13 motor patents.

These are undoubtedly the most important patents in the Tesla lineup, though the automaker also holds 10 user interface patents. One of the best parts of the Tesla experience is the excellent user interface and massive touchscreen system, which handles every single aspect of the Tesla’s operation, from HVAC to ride height.

Some of the outliers include 9 sunroof patents, 8 door patents, and 6 patents each for audio and cooling systems. As for those “Uncategorized” patents, they tend to be specific patents that don’t fall into any of the above categories, like a patent for the air ride suspension control.

no wonder he's a "fool cell" basher

...Hidden among the patents announcement was Musk's comments on automakers' use of fuel cells, which use the reaction from combining hydrogen with oxygen to generate electricity.

"I don't think fuel cells are a viable path," he said. "Even the best theoretical fuel cell doesn't compete with batteries. It doesn't seem like the right move."

This is a weighty statement to make. Confronted with rising costs and flagging sales, major automakers have been ramping up fuel cell production while winding down their battery-powered vehicles. Chrysler-Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne recently implored an audience not to buy any more of the firm's battery-powered 500e car because the company loses too much money on them. Hyundai is expanding its fuel-cell fleet. And Toyota just rolled up its contract for Tesla components.

Surely timing his patent announcement during the week that the very first mass produced fuel cell electric vehicle in history was delivered is just a coincidence. Because he's just in the whole thing for humanity's sake.

If a battery breakthrough (unrelated to fuel cells) happens how many of the 104 are worthless? Like a patent on a new kind of vacuum tube?

which was announced to the world a few weeks back. It will be very interesting to see if it pans out.
