Russia 'secretly working with environmentalists to oppose fracking

Anders Fogh Rasmussen, secretary-general of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (Nato), and former premier of Denmark, told the Chatham House thinktank in London on Thursday that Vladimir Putin’s government was behind attempts to discredit fracking, according to reports.

Rasmussen said: “I have met allies who can report that Russia, as part of their sophisticated information and disinformation operations, engaged actively with so-called non-governmental organisations - environmental organisations working against shale gas - to maintain European dependence on imported Russian gas.” He declined to give details of those operations, saying: “That is my interpretation.”

...snip...

A Nato official told the Guardian that Russia's influence on energy supplies was causing problems for Europe. The official said: "We don't go into the details of discussions among allied leaders, but Russia has been using a mix of hard and soft power in its attempt to recreate a sphere of influence, including through a campaign of disinformation on many issues, including energy. In general, the potential for Russia using energy supplies as a means of putting pressure on European nations is a matter of concern. No country should use supply and pricing terms as tools of coercion.

...snip...

Green groups were swift to attack Rasmussen’s views, saying that they were not involved in any alleged Russian attempts to discredit the technology, and were instead opposed to it on the grounds of environmental sustainability. “The idea we’re puppets of Putin is so preposterous that you have to wonder what they’re smoking over at Nato HQ,” said Greenpeace, which has a history of antagonism with the Russian government, which arrested several of its activists on a protest in the Arctic last year.

They've been doing largely the same thing to nuclear power. Not that they're opposed to it themselves (nor likely fracking), but see supporting the opposition throught Europe as a way to cement their sphere of influence in the region.

Of course... Greenpeace's (etc) insistence that they aren't influenced by what Russia wants is absolutely true. They would oppose fracking either way, but I don't think that's the claim. It's that Russia is using their propaganda machine to aide that opposition, not create it.

If Russia wants to spread propaganda against it that's fine with me.

I'm right on the edge of fracking in PA. It's not hard to see the adverse effects of the process. Putin may be a bastard but I don't think he's stupid. You can't destroy the land you live on and expect good results.

I already get enough grief here because I watch RT. I still find it much more informative than network or cable news in the US.

4. RT has its share of propaganda, but some of it's shows are as awesome as American media are awful.

.....I do not understand the black and white hate or love thinking of people who otherwise seem rationale.
You may not have gotten a lot of response to your post because maybe you got some people with this black and white mentality thinking like they usually do, with an open mind and evidence based opinion.

There are certain subjects discussed here where whatever you have to say is always wrong. It doesn't matter what your research or historical perspective is, you cannot convince someone who ideologically will not accept a viewpoint that challenges what they hold to be unquestioned truth.

As to RT, their news coverage is much more informative than US media. Much more detail and not so much opinion. The analyses shows, there are a handful that I find accurate and informative, others, such as Crosstalk, I won't waste my time with. As a geek I really appreciate Tech Update.

5. The problem with that of course...

... is that there's little evidence that this is something Putin "stands for".

There's no reason to believe that Putin would oppose fracking in Russia if it was needed. It just isn't needed. They've dramatically increased natural gas production in recent years and plan an even more dramatic increase over the next decade or so...

... they just don't want their current customers producing their own.

But since you brought it up, let us not pretend that you've received "unhinged responses" for supporting just "one thing" Putin is doing.
