India Electrification Project

In April 2015, India had 18,452 villages that had no electricity. In August 2015, the Indian Prime Minister made it his mission to bring that to zero within 1000 days. So far (as of today) 6955 now have electricity (38% of the total). The plan is not without its issues (much of the electricity is coal generated), but the benefits of bringing power to millions of people is seen as something the Indian government can live with.

Here's an updated dashboard of the status: http://103.233.79.65/dashboard

And here's a Guardian article about how the project has effected one community: http://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2016/mar/21/electrifying-india-the-day-the-light-came-to-rural-hotasar
