New York man sues UPS for blocking bicycle lanes

One New York City bicyclist says he's tired of United Parcel Service trucks getting in his way, and he hopes the courts will make the parcel giant change its ways.

New York City resident Alex Bell has reportedly filed two new lawsuits against UPS that accuse Big Brown's trucks of repeatedly blocking Manhattan bike lanes by double-parking in them during deliveries.

"I am trying to annoy UPS," Bell told the news site DNAinfo.com, which first revealed his Civil Court complaints Friday. "If you annoy them enough, they'll change maybe."

1. Does UPS have immunity from lawsuits like the gun industry has? If not...stop parking there!

Find a parking spot and obey the law...no special exemption I know of...US Postal Service would not do this because greed and profit are not their sole criteria.

See: http://www.nbcnews.com/id/14602712/ns/business-us_business/t/delivery-firms-big-ticket-item-parking-fines/

The USPS though believes it is exempt from parking tickets (and apparently other traffic fines/penalties):

From: http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout/usps-immune-local-traffic-laws-165944476.html

“However, as you are probably aware, the Postal Service enjoys federal immunity from state and local regulation

And having lived in NYC I can tell you the USPS parked wherever they wanted when making deliveries.

5. Indeed. I used to live across the street from a supermarket that had no parking lot

and no usable loading dock area. Basically all the delivery trucks had to double park while unloading.

2. IIRC (and I may be wrong) drivers get punished for taking too long ...

Drivers have a quota to fill, and taking the time to find a legal spot to park may keep them from doing so. Fail to meet your quotas and your job goes to someone else.
