Why a military spat between Japan and South Korea could snowball into crisis

South Korea and Japan are historical adversaries locked in a marriage of convenience, which makes for a complex partnership. Their relationship is still very much colored by the legacy of imperial Japan's occupation and colonization of the Korean Peninsula in the first half of the 20th century.
This revived tension comes at a terrible time for the United States -- the Trump administration is currently preparing for its second summit with North Korea, while also inching towards a key deadline in trade talks with China.
Shortly after the initial incident, Japan and South Korea held working-level meetings to try to resolve the issue behind closed doors.

This has been an important news story in Korea and Japan since the 23rd. This CNN article is an attempt to address the subject in a historical context. It's a start. It's a difficult and emotional subject matter in which historical characterizations are often oversimplified.
The responses suggested by South Koreans and aired in their media apart from withdrawing from military information sharing with Japan, include responding in kind with their own aircraft, firing warning shots from vessels after an appropriate warning to unresponsive Japanese aircraft, using a shipborne helicopter to interpose itself between circling Japanese aircraft and Korean naval vessels, etc. The South Korean Defense Minister said merely they would take appropriate measures in accordance with their military code. He visited the ROK Navy Operational Headquarters today to reassure operational crews of South Korean resolve to respond to provocations.
