Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu loathes Barack Obama, and his hostile attitude to the US president constitutes a danger to Israels well-being, the head of the Israeli opposition charged on Friday night, in a highly unusual acknowledgement of the long-rumored strained personal ties between the two leaders.
n a bitter verbal assault on the prime minister, Labor party chairman Isaac Herzog slammed Netanyahu for failing to listen to the international community, failing to present peace proposals of his own for an accord with the Palestinians, and failing to work properly with Obama.
It was a tragedy that Netanyahu had not presented a peace plan, and was instead dragged into responding to other proposals, said Herzog. The second tragedy, that endangers the security of Israel, is his loathing and hostility for Barack Obama, Herzog went on, describing this as one of Netanyahus gravest failures.
Herzog, who was minister of welfare under Netanyahu from 2009-2011, was speaking in an interview on Channel 2 news in the aftermath of this weeks formation of a new Hamas-backed Palestinian unity government. Netanyahu had called on the international community to stand up against what he described as a government backed by a terrorist organization, but instead the US led the world in making clear that it would work with the new Palestinian government, and the EU, the UN and much of the rest of the international community quickly followed suit.

(34,648 posts)After how they denigrated Kerry and refused to make a deal all bets are off. We are about to see a shift in blame and i am hoping an abstention from voting on resolutions against the occupation.
I am starting to think that a one state solution may be on the horizon.
Bibi is a diplomatic failure and constantly abusing the 'friendship' he has with Israel 's allies.

(45,850 posts)waiting for a friendlier administration to take over in 2017 perhaps, until then stall obfuscate and propagandize, will these tactics work is another question, one would hope that the US would have the decency to abstain from any UNSC vote on Palestine and the settlements , however I also think that Bibi intends to maintain the occupation for the foreseeable future no matter what else happens, that IMO is his solution

(34,648 posts)I think he may have made a misstep this time. The way he handled this with such arrogance and distain for his nation's 'closest allies' shows that he is not interested in a solution because this is his solution. I do not think it will work this time and i am with you in hoping we abstain or - heaven forbid- vote to sanction them ourselves. I know thats a fantasy, but one can dream.

(23,664 posts)His glad handing didn't work, his bullying didn't work so now he "loathes" Obama like a spoiled child who has been told he can no longer have everything he wants.
He has painted his country into a corner and begun to alienate his last ally among the international community. Maybe he thinks he can hang on for two more years and get a better deal from Obama's successor.
